📋 Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Establish Primary Reference Creases
Place the square sheet colored-side down on the table. Fold the paper in half horizontally, crease firmly, and unfold; repeat vertically. Next, fold diagonally from corner to corner both ways and unfold, creating an eight-rayed crease pattern intersecting at the exact center.

Perform the Blintz Fold (Corners to Center)
Fold all four outer corners inward so their sharp tips meet precisely at the center intersection point. Reinforce all four outer perimeter creases with your creasing tool to keep the flaps flat.

Fold the Outer Edges to the Centerline
Turn the folded square over so the smooth side faces up. Fold the left and right vertical edges inward to meet flush at the center vertical crease line, forming a tall rectangle, then unfold them back out.

Form the Spring Sides (Squash and Valley Folds)
Repeat the previous fold with the top and bottom horizontal edges to create a grid of guide creases. Open the paper slightly, push the diagonal corner folds inward along existing crease lines, and collapse the sides upward into a 3D tray shape with upright triangular walls.

- • Forcing new creases instead of using the pre-creased diagonal lines to collapse the walls.
Shape and Lock the Snapping Jaws
Fold the top and bottom locking flaps over the internal gussets down into the floor of the tray to lock the walls upright. Gently pinch the center spine on the underside outward while bringing the two side jaws together to form the snapping mouth mechanism.
- • A two-sided clamping jaw structure that naturally springs open when relaxed and snaps shut when compressed.
- • Failing to tuck the locking tabs completely flat against the base, causing the walls to pop open.
Set and Test the Trap Action
Open the jaws wide and press gently on the internal trigger plate to set the paper spring under tension. Test the trap by lightly tapping the inner plate with a pencil tip to ensure the jaws snap closed instantly.
