๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Precision craft knife
- โ Metal ruler
- โ Pencil
- โ Bone folder
- โ Cutting mat
- โ Scissors
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 2 sheets of contrasting colored cardstock (e.g., bright pink and cyan)
- โ 1 sheet of white heavyweight cardstock (approx. 200-250 gsm)
- โ Double-sided tape (0.25 inch / 6mm width)
- โ Glue stick
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Place fingers firmly behind the metal ruler edge, well clear of the craft knife cutting path.
- โข Always cut downwards against the self-healing cutting mat, never toward your free hand or body.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Cut the Housing Frame and Window
Mark and cut a 12x18 cm rectangle from white cardstock. Fold it in half horizontally to create a 12x9 cm bi-fold card, creasing firmly with the bone folder. On the front flap, use the ruler and pencil to draw a 1 cm outer border, then cut out the center rectangle with your craft knife to form an open frame window.
- โข A folded 12x9 cm card with a clean rectangular cutout on the top layer forming an even 1 cm frame.
- โข Cutting through both layers of the folded card instead of just the front flap.
Cut Parallel Slits on the Window Frame
Open the frame flat on the cutting mat. Use your ruler to mark 1 cm vertical intervals across the open inner cutout area on the top and bottom borders. Slice vertical slits spanning from the top frame border to the bottom border at 1 cm increments to create vertical weave columns.
- โข Evenly spaced 1 cm vertical paper bars spanning the window aperture, intact at the top and bottom borders.
- โข Over-cutting past the border lines, severing the vertical bars completely.
Cut and Prepare Contrasting Color Strips
Cut two 10x8 cm rectangles, one from each contrasting colored cardstock sheet. On each colored rectangle, measure and cut vertical 1 cm wide strips, stopping 1 cm before the top edge so they remain attached to a solid header tab. You should have two comb-shaped sheets with 1 cm wide teeth.
- โข Two comb-like colored cardstock pieces with evenly spaced 1 cm teeth anchored by a solid top strip.
- โข Slicing the colored strips all the way through the top anchor border.
Interweave the Color Combs through the Slits
Align the two colored combs back-to-back with colors offset. Thread the teeth of the first color through the window frame slits in an alternating over-under pattern. Thread the second color through the opposite weave positions so that shifting the header tabs alternates which color is visible through the front.
- โข A woven grid in the frame window showing solid color A in position one and switching cleanly to color B when shifted horizontally by 1 cm.
- โข Weaving both colors in the same over-under sequence instead of inverted patterns.
Mount Pull Tabs and Enclose the Housing
Apply double-sided tape strictly along the outer 0.5 cm perimeter of the back white card cover, leaving the center slider area completely free of adhesive. Attach a cardstock pull-tab handle to the active slider comb header, then fold and seal the outer housing together around the mechanism.
- โข The white cardstock housing is sealed along the three outer edges, with a pull tab extending cleanly from the side.
- โข Placing tape too close to the sliding strips, gluing the mechanism shut.
Test and Calibrate Color Transformation
Gently push and pull the side tab back and forth over a 1 cm travel distance. Confirm that the window display snaps cleanly from 100% Color A to 100% Color B. If strips catch on the frame edges, trim half a millimeter off the trailing ends inside the slider track.
- โข Smooth sliding action revealing an instant, full color transformation across the entire front window with zero strip binding.
- โข Pulling the tab out past its intended stop point, dislodging the internal comb.
