๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Scissors or craft knife with self-healing cutting mat
- โ Steel ruler
- โ Bone folder or plastic card
- โ Cylindrical marker or 20mm dowel
- โ Mini binder clips or paper clips
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 2 sheets of 80-100 gsm colored craft paper (two contrasting colors)
- โ Glue stick or double-sided tape runner
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Always cut away from fingers when using a craft knife or scissors along the ruler edge.
- โข Do not force trapped fingers out violently; gently push the ends together to widen the internal diameter and release tension.
- โข Use smooth copy paper or lightweight origami paper rather than thick cardstock to prevent sharp paper cuts.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Measure and Cut Four Uniform Paper Strips
Using a steel ruler and craft knife or scissors, cut four equal strips of paper measuring 1.5 cm (0.6 in) wide and 30 cm (12 in) long. Cut two strips from one color and two from a contrasting color to make tracking the weave pattern easier. Flatten any curled edges using a bone folder or the back edge of your fingernail.
- โข Four identical strips with crisp, straight parallel edges
- โข Two strips of color A and two strips of color B laid out flat
- โข Cutting strips unevenly, which creates gaps or loose spots in the final woven tube
- โข Using heavy cardstock that resists bending cleanly around the cylindrical guide
Form the Top Interlocking Cross
Place one strip of color A horizontally, then lay one strip of color B vertically across its center at a 90-degree angle. Place the second strip of color A parallel to the first, weaving it over and under the vertical strip. Lay the second strip of color B down, creating an interlocking 2x2 woven square hub at the center.
- โข A snug, balanced checkerboard square formed by the four overlapping strips
- โข Eight loose strip ends radiating outward in four pairs
- โข Leaving the central weave too loose, which creates an oversized, weak opening
- โข Failing to alternate over-and-under, causing the weave to fall apart when moved
Mount the Woven Hub onto the Cylindrical Form
Center the woven square over the flat cap end of your cylindrical marker or dowel. Bend all eight strip legs downward along the length of the cylinder to match its contour. Use a mini binder clip or a light wrap of low-tack tape at the top to hold the square firmly against the cylinder head while you weave.
- โข The woven square sits flat over the cylinder tip
- โข Four pairs of strips hang down diagonally around the circumference of the tube form
- โข Choosing a dowel that is too wide or too narrow for an index finger
- โข Clipping the paper so tightly that it tears at the woven corners
Braid the Strips in Opposing Helixes
Divide the strips into clockwise and counter-clockwise groups based on their angles. Wrap two strips diagonally around the cylinder clockwise while crossing the other two strips counter-clockwise. At each intersection, alternate the weave (over-under-over-under), pulling the strips snug against the surface of the cylinder.
- โข A distinct diamond mesh pattern emerging down the sides of the marker
- โข Strips hugging the cylinder walls with uniform tension
- โข Accidentally weaving two strips over each other consecutively without alternating
- โข Pulling too hard and tearing the paper strips at the intersection points
Continue the Spiral Weave to Target Length
Repeat the over-under braiding process spiral by spiral until the woven section reaches roughly 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in) in length. Ensure each diamond gap remains consistent in size and shape around the entire circumference. Leave roughly 2 to 3 cm of excess paper at the end of each strip to finalize the binding.
- โข A continuous, flexible cylinder of woven diamonds covering the guide marker
- โข Uniform diamond shapes without sagging loops or bunched paper
- โข Weaving too loosely, which prevents the trap from constricting properly upon extension
- โข Letting the strips twist onto their wrong sides during braiding
Secure and Trim the Terminal Ends
Apply a thin smear of glue stick or double-sided tape under the final overlapping intersections of the strips. Press firmly with your fingers or a bone folder for 15 seconds to bond the joints securely. Once dry, trim the remaining tails flush with the edge using scissors, then slide the finished finger trap off the cylindrical guide.
- โข Clean, flush end rings on both sides of the trap
- โข The tube slides smoothly off the marker and flexes freely when compressed lengthwise
- โข Using excess wet glue that softens the paper and glues the trap to the dowel
- โข Cutting the structural weave instead of only the excess tails during final trimming
