π Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Measure and Cut Straw Spacers
Use a ruler and marker to mark two 1-inch (2.5 cm) sections on your drinking straw. Carefully snip both sections with scissors to create two uniform cylindrical spacers. Ensure the cut edges are flat and free of jagged burrs so they sit evenly across the craft sticks.

Install the Central Vibrating Reed
Take one craft stick and stretch the wide rubber band lengthwise along its full length. The rubber band should run flat along the center of the wooden stick without any twists. Make sure the tension is even across both sides of the wood.

Insert the Offset Straw Spacers
Slip one straw piece underneath the wide rubber band roughly half an inch from the left end of the stick. Place the second straw piece on top of the rubber band roughly half an inch from the right end of the stick. This alternating over-and-under arrangement creates the necessary clearance for the rubber band to vibrate freely between the sticks.

Align the Top Craft Stick
Place the second craft stick directly over the assembled base, sandwiching the straws and the wide rubber band between them. Align the edges and ends of both sticks so they match up symmetrically. Press down lightly on the ends while keeping the middle gap open.

Secure Both Ends with Outer Bands
Wrap a smaller rubber band tightly around one end of the sandwiched sticks, winding it 4 to 6 times until snug. Repeat the process on the opposite end with the second small rubber band. The bindings must be tight enough to pinch the ends firmly over the spacers without bending the wood excessively.

Test and Adjust Pitch
Hold the harmonica horizontally against your lips and blow directly through the center gap between the two wooden sticks. Adjust the pitch by sliding the straw spacers closer together for a higher pitch or farther apart for a lower pitch. Hum or blow with steady air pressure to achieve a crisp, buzzing reed sound.
