📋 Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Scour and Pre-Wash Cotton Fabric
Simmer the raw cotton yardage in a large pot with washing soda and a mild detergent for 30 minutes to strip natural waxes, oils, and industrial sizing. Rinse the fabric thoroughly in warm water and keep it damp for the dyeing phase. Squeeze out excess water evenly without wringing into tight creases.

Build and Reduce the Indigo Vat
Mix natural indigo powder, slaked lime, and reducing agent in warm water (approx. 50°C / 120°F) in a 1:2:3 ratio. Stir gently in one direction to create a vortex, then reverse gently to avoid introducing oxygen into the liquid. Place the lid on the bucket and let it rest for 45-60 minutes until the chemical reduction takes place.

Submerge, Soak, and Oxidize the Fabric
Gently push the surface flower aside and lower the damp cotton into the vat without splashing. Carefully pull the cloth out, gently squeeze excess dye back into the vat, and hang it in open air to watch it oxidize from bright yellow-green to deep indigo blue.

Neutralize, Rinse, and Press

Hang to dry out of direct sunlight, then press completely flat with a hot steam iron.

Mark and Cut Traditional Robe Panels

Mark a central body panel (folded at the shoulder with no shoulder seam), two wide sleeve panels, front overlapping lapels (jiaoling cross-collar style), and side skirt gussets using tailor's chalk. Cut along the chalked lines using long, continuous scissor strokes with a 1.5 cm seam allowance.

Stitch Main Body and Sleeve Seams
