📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Fold the Origami Figures
Fold five matching origami figures, such as traditional cranes, ensuring each crease is sharply burnished. Keep the top vertex and bottom point aligned along the central vertical axis.

- • Symmetrical wings and crisp center spines visible on all models.
- • Creasing with soft finger pads leading to loose, uneven wings.
Prepare the Mobile Frame
Cut two wooden dowels to length, one around 20 cm and one around 15 cm. Cut tiny notches 5 mm inward from each end using scissors to seat the suspension threads securely.
- • Two smooth dowels cut to distinct lengths with shallow circumferential grooves at both ends.
- • Cutting notches too deeply, which snaps the thin wood dowel.
Pierce and Thread the Origami Units
Thread a sewing needle with a 40 cm piece of monofilament line and tie a bead at the end. Push the needle upward through the bottom center opening of an origami figure and out the top spine.
- • Thread passes straight through the vertical center axis of the origami figure.
- • Bead is hidden inside or neatly seated under the base, supporting the figure upright.
- • Piercing off-center, causing the figure to tilt drastically when lifted.
Assemble Lower Tier and Balance
Tie two threaded figures to the notched ends of the shorter dowel. Tie a central lift line around the dowel's middle, sliding the knot along the shaft until the bar hangs completely horizontal.
- • Lower dowel hangs horizontally in mid-air with one origami figure suspended from each end.
- • Center knot is secured tightly once level balance is achieved.
- • Permanently knotting the center string before checking if the dowel tilts.
Assemble Top Tier and Set Final Suspension
Tie the remaining figures and the lower-tier assembly to the longer upper dowel. Attach the main suspension line to the top dowel, balance the entire structure, and trim excess line tails.
- • Both tiers hang freely without colliding, maintaining parallel horizontal planes.
- • Excess thread tails trimmed cleanly to within 3 mm of all knots.
- • Hanging figures too close together, causing them to tangle when rotating.
