How to Build a Cardstock Stomp Rocket

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Roll the Rocket Body Tube
Wrap a full sheet of cardstock tightly around the 1/2-inch PVC guide pipe lengthwise. Keep the paper snug against the pipe so it forms a uniform cylinder, but loose enough to slide easily. Secure the entire exposed seam from top to bottom with a long strip of tape.

Seal the Body Tube Airtight
Apply a second layer of tape around the cylinder in overlapping rings or a continuous spiral. Slide the tube partially off the PVC pipe and pinch one end closed, taping it flat and tight. Blow into the open end to test for air leaks; no air should escape through the seam.

Cut and Shape the Aerodynamic Fins
Draw three to four identical right triangles on a second sheet of cardstock using a ruler, roughly 2 inches tall by 3 inches long. Cut out each triangle cleanly with scissors. Fold a 1/4-inch mounting tab along the longest straight edge of each fin to create an attachment flange.

- โข Cutting unevenly sized fins that will induce uncontrolled aerodynamic spin.

Attach Fins Equidistantly to Base
Align the fins around the open bottom end of the body tube, spaced evenly at 90-degree (4 fins) or 120-degree (3 fins) intervals. Tape each fin's mounting flange securely to the tube wall, ensuring the fins extend straight outward like spokes on a wheel. Reinforce both sides of each fin with clear tape.

Form and Mount the Nose Cone
Mold a 1-ounce ball of modeling clay into a smooth, rounded cone and press it securely onto the sealed top of the tube. Cut a small paper circle, snip a slit to the center, roll it into a paper cone, and fit it over the clay. Tape the paper cone firmly to the rocket body to lock the nose weight in place.

Perform Pre-Flight Balance and Clearance Check
Slide the finished rocket onto the PVC launch tube to verify it glides on and off smoothly with gravity alone. Hold the rocket horizontally on one fingertip about one-third down from the nose cone to verify the center of gravity is forward of the fin area. Adjust by adding or removing clay under the nose cone if tail-heavy.
